New York: Fostering Creativity & Social Responsiveness in Science

April 27, 2016 at Ligo Project in New York.

tracking.php?code=vBXSAQAJxzRaFCwlQ5ngt2

Scientists make discoveries, engineers design new technologies, artists create multimedia installations contemplating how the world works, corporations develop and distribute new products, policymakers, researchers, creatives, and grassroots activists alike attempt to create positive impacts, while others instead either choose to remain a passive observer or feel their voice goes unheard. Ideally, all of these actors could work together at all stages of scientific and technological development to ensure the best outcomes for society as a whole. However, integrating these often disparate and sometimes competing fields—labs, creative spaces, corporations, universities, funding organizations, movements, governing bodies, and communities—is challenging. Ligo Project is working to dissolve those boundaries and to tackle this challenge with creativity.

Join us at the table for part 2 of an intimate yet challenging 3-part multidisciplinary exchange of ideas that gives everyone the opportunity to be heard and aims to change how we as a society think about, learn about, and talk about art, science and technology.

with Special Guests:

Katayoun Chamany – Associate Professor of Biology, Director Interdisciplinary Science, The New School

Tracy Essoglou – Founder, CultureScaping – social literacy salons & culture seminars; recognized artist, author, indie scholar, practicing philosopher, & activist

Deepu Gowda – Physician, Associate Professor of Medicine & the Director of Clinical Practice in the program in Narrative Medicine at Columbia University Medical Center

Matthew Stanley – Associate Professor History & Philosophy of Science NYU Gallatin

Zishan Ugurlu – Associate Professor of Theater, Program Director, The New School

How it Works:

Science (as) Culture will use a format inspired by Lois Weaver’s conversation as performance project ‘T he Long Table ’, which is informal, participatory & nonhierarchical. Special guests are invited to ‘seed’ the conversation but the “audience” is invited to take a seat at the table and join in. At all points in this discussion, it will be important not to take “progress” as self evident, and to ask why a particular idea or research practice makes sense. The rules of engagement will be such that free thought and open exchange are highly encouraged at all times – everyone’s voice is heard.

Goals:

The intended outcome of the Science (as) Culture Discussion Series will be to create a “Call to action” summary document toward taking positive steps in our community to better achieve the integration of science & society. We will use the call to action summary as a platform for the following: a discussion/white paper, blog and/or other article(s) in order to more broadly distribute the ideas exchanged in our discussions as well as to draft letters to the editors of relevant newspapers and other media sources; to distribute ideas & needs to other nonprofits with relevant missions as a means to coalesce a wider community around positive action toward the integration of science and society in our community; and to seed content and context for additional public town hall style discussions and events that will work toward new and creative contexts for the integration of science and society.

Location Details:

Pratt Institute, 200 Willoughby Ave, East Hall 1, across from the Engine Room, in the Center for Career & Professional Development

Event Schedule:

Doors: 30 min prior

Stew Leonard’s to Welcome Former NFL Great Bubba Baker for a Tasting of Bubba Q’s De-Boned Baby Back Rib Steak at Stew’s in Yonkers (4/22) and Stew’s in Farmingdale (4/23)

If you are looking for fall-off-the-bone-tender ribs, look no further than Bubba Baker’s patented Bubba’s Q De-Boned Baby Back Rib Steak! Stew Leonard’s will welcome Al “Bubba” Baker, a former defensive lineman for the Cleveland Browns and current owner of Bubba Q’s World Famous Bar-B-Q & Catering in Avon Lake, Ohio, and his daughter Brittani for a special tasting event of these de-boned ribs. Stew Leonard’s customers nibble and gnaw more than 200,000lbs of baby back ribs every year. Bubba’s De-Boned Baby Back Rib Steaks were first seen on ABC-TV’s Shark Tank when investor and entrepreneur Daymond John agreed to invest in the patented de-boned pork ribs and the food company started by Baker and his children. Bubba’s Q De-Boned Baby Back Rib Steak start as a slab of ribs, and through Bubba’s “magic” process, slide the bones right out leaving nothing but tender meat.

Bubba’s Q De-Boned Baby Back Rib Steak will be available for purchase at Stew Leonard’s for $12.99 for an 18 ounce package. The de-boned ribs are fully cooked and can be grilled, baked in a conventional oven, or even popped in the microwave for a juicy and tender BBQ meal.

Al “Bubba” Baker was drafted in 1978 as a 6’6”, 280lb defensive end by the Detroit Lions. He went on to be named 1978 and played in three Pro Bowls. Bubba’s barbecuing roots can be traced back to the 1950’s in Jacksonville, Florida where Bubba’s uncle, “Daddy Jr.,” took him under his wing, showing him the secrets of the family business. Daddy Jr. is none other than the owner of Jenkins Quality Barbeque, considered one of the finest barbeque restaurants not only in the south, but the entire country. Bubba’s-Q received Cleveland Magazine’s Silver Spoon Award for both “Best Ribs” and “Best Barbecue Restaurant” for four consecutive years. Opening Reception: Thursday, May 5th, 2016 6-9pm

Jennifer Grimyser’s Suggestion Mark is an exploration of communication—verbal and non-verbal alike. Her integration of photographs and photographic sculptures creates an experience of “images bouncing between 3D space, illusionistic space, and the 2D surface of a print.” By pushing photography, a medium often regarded as one limited to “the 2D surface,” into the realm of performance, Grimyser carves out a space within which to anatomize the interplay between language and image.

Both atmospheric and graphic, Grimyser’s photographic prints of dusty chalkboards, erased by hand, display the static remnants of a language, a past lesson, or an expression removed. The space is populated with photographic sculptures of hands, used as “part-time performers,” caught in the act of attempting to communicate. The hands are abstracted and segmented, emerging from the gallery floor—some form a pastiche of familiar signs and gestures, while others vaguely point/direct the viewer’s attention.

About the Artist
Born in Milwaukee, WI, Jennifer Grimyser received a BFA from MICA and an MFA from Hunter College. She has presented solo exhibitions at Bronx River Arts Center and Solo(s) Project House. Her work has been exhibited nationally and internationally in numerous group exhibitions including galleries such as Kunstverein Wolfsburg, Kunsthalle Exnergasse, Lesley Heller Workspace, Center for Emerging Visual Artists, Islip Art Museum, BRIC Rotunda Gallery, Bronx Art Space, the School of Art Institute of Chicago, Present Company Gallery and Transmitter Gallery. She has also been awarded multiple studio residencies, including Vermont Studio Center, Women’s Studio Workshop, NARS Foundation, and chashama.

Jennifer has published two limited-edition artist books through Women’s Studio Workshop and Kayrock Screenprinting.

Currently, Jennifer’s work is featured in several collections, including those of the Walker Arts Center, Yale University, Rhode Island School of Design, Maryland Institute College of Art, Virginia Commonwealth University, Rochester Institute of Technology, Indiana University, Minneapolis College of Art and Design.
