The funds raised from this POLLY will go towards the Holding Our Own’s Sanctuary Fund.

The fund is a loan/grant fund established to finance security deposits to women and families in our community who find they need to leave their homes without notice. This could be as a result of a disaster, a divorce, domestic violence or any other emergent need. The definition of “sanctuary” speaks for itself. The fund benefits women and their families who do not have access to other sources of support. To maintain the fund’s balance and continue making loans/grants to many community members over time, we encourage loans over grants with the pledge of replenishing the fund within the means of the recipient.

Kingston: The Slackers / Big Takeover / Los Thujones | BSP Kingston

June 11, 2016 at BSP Kingston in Kingston.

Output Agency Ltd. + Ranger Rick present

The Slackers!
with special guests The Big Takeover + Los Thujones!

$15 adv / $20 door | 18+ | 7:30 Doors

The Slackers are a classic American band that is equal parts grit and grace. Their slow rise against the odds is a story of perseverance and a belief in their musical vision, what Vic likes to call, “Jamaican Rock N Roll.” While they have been influenced, and even personally taught by Jamaican Ska/Reggae originators, like the Skatalites and the Upsetters (Original backing band for the Wailers), the band sees its music as an extension of the traditions of the United States. This band is equally appreciative of old Blues, Country, 60s Soul, Rock, and Rn’B as it is of Reggae, Rocksteady, Dub, and Ska. It is as if the Rolling Stones or the Yardbirds had grown up on Bob Marley as well as Muddy Waters.

Smashing the stereotypes of “Ska” as happy, uptempo, and shallow music, the Slackers play with an aggressive edge and their songs veer in themes from the personal to the political. They can out jam any hippie band and outwrite most singer songwriters. From their 1996 release, Better Late Than Never through to 2010 with The Great Rocksteady Swindle, they have established themselves as America’s premiere interpreters and innovators of Jamaican music and a pretty good rock band to boot. The Great Rocksteady Swindle (release date 4/20/10) is a songwriting tour de force with all band members contributing to its gutsy muscular sound. “Mr. Tragedy” references the Specials while “Boll Weevil” references Sam Sham & the Pharaohs. “Cheated” seethes with bitterness while “Thank You” offers the possibility of hope. As the band has matured you can’t even tell anymore where the rock begins and the reggae ends, its become The Slackers.

Rock, disco, swing and zydeco are also part of the mix. Occasionally, we feature guest artists, one of whom is the wonderful vocalist, Efrain ‘La Voz’ Colon.

New York: Todd Neufeld Group at Cornelia Street Cafe

May 04, 2016 at Cornelia Street Cafe in New York.

Todd Neufeld (guitar)
Rema Hasumi (voice)
Thomas Morgan (bass)
Tyshawn Sorey (drums and trombone)
Billy Mintz (drums and percussion)

Guitarist and composer Todd Neufeld’s exciting new band will premiere new material on May 4 2016 at Cornelia Street Cafe, in anticipation of an upcoming recording for Ruweh Records.

Neufeld’s original works create palettes and points of destination for this dynamic two-drummer band. In addition to the original works, there is carefully selected material from pre-reggae era, as well as a re-imaging of Samuel Beckett works for the ensembles explorations.

All five members of the band are long time figures in New York and beyond, in the jazz and improvisation scenes. Todd Neufeld has played a key role in the bands of Masabumi Kikuchi, Lee Konitz, Tyshawn Sorey himself and so many others. Thomas Morgan has been the omni-present bass force in so many key creative ensembles, most recently with Bill Frisell. Tyshawn Sorey is a formidable leader of his own as well as the soon to be Professor at Wesleyan University, taking on the role after the great Anthony Braxton. Billy Mintz has played with everyone from Charles Lloyd to the Johnny Carson Show Band, and newest arrival in New York, Rema Hasumi has recently released her debut album UTAZATA to international acclaim.

The concert has 2 sets at 8pm and 9:30pm,
with $10 admission and $10 food/ drink minimum.
