Rochester: Unforeseen Structures (Opening Reception)

April 14, 2017 at Flower City Arts Center in Rochester.

Unforeseen Structures is artist Mitch Goldstein’s examination of emergent form using darkroom photography techniques, specifically the photogram. Photograms use no cameras or lenses — instead, objects are placed on or near unexposed photographic paper and briefly exposed to light. This process results in abstract black and white compositions, which emerge unpredictably from the physical materials used in their creation. Goldstein relinquishes control, relying instead on intuition and chance to allow form and structure to develop from the process.

Address: 713 Monroe Ave, Rochester

Brooklyn: Photo exhibition ” Institutionalized” by Paul Barcena

March 03, 2017 at SoAMstudio in Brooklyn.

SoAM presents “Institutionalized“, a photography exhibition by Paul Barcena. Paul is a Mexican fine art photographer based in New York.

About Institutionalized:

The meaning of conflict changes from person to person, place to place, language to language.

This year – this month, even – has highlighted our divisions, be they political, racial, religious, sexual, or generational. Big and small. System and fringes. Continuity and change. Similarities and differences.

Outsiders who want in on any system have to play the game, it seems. There is a language in each world; a way to do things, a way to see things. So where do outsiders fit in? There is a dialogue. There is also a tension.

This project digs into the uneasy conflict of merging two worlds together.

The large photos were made at major art institutions in New York. They are black and white, structured, formal, big. The small color photos capture parts of the un-curated world outside. In some ways they clash, in some ways they align.

The exhibition will be on view through March 16th, 2017.
