TASCA WINERY

The island of Sicily is home to the Tasca d’Almerita family of estates: Regaleali, Capofaro, and Whitaker. The Regaleali estate is at the heart of the family’s wine production, and also serves as an escape from the bustle of the coastal capital of Palermo. In 2002, the family purchased vineyards on the small island of Salina to create Tenuta Capofaro, which produces elegant sweet wines with high acidity yet fresh balance throughout. The Whitaker estate consists of vineyards originally planted by the English family of the same name in the 19th century.

As a result of Count Giuseppe’s hard work and dedication over the past 50 years, all the wines of Tasca d’Almerita are celebrated worldwide for their outstanding value and prestigious history. Count Giuseppe’s son, Count Lucio, is president of the family-run winery, and his two sons, Giuseppe and Alberto, serve as vice president and managing director, respectively. In addition to the wines, the estate is practically self sufficient, producing most of the vegetables, fruits, wheat, olives, cheeses and meats they need. This inspired Marchesa Anna Tasca Lanza, Count Lucio’s sister, to establish a culinary school, considered one of the best in Italy today. The school has inspired culinary professionals from around the world, including Julia Child and Alice Waters. In addition, Anna has introduced hundreds more to the art of Sicilian cuisine through her cookbooks, Heart of Sicily: Recipes and Reminiscences of Regaleali, a Country Estate and The Flavors of Sicily: Stories, Traditions, and Recipes for Warm-Weather Cooking.

While the history of Tasca d’Almerita dates back to the 19th century, it was Count Giuseppe Tasca who started a new era for the winery and the Sicilian wine business in the late 1950s, devoting himself to the promotion of Sicilian wines and introducing a new business model based on quality and innovation rather than quantity and bulk production. He invented the winery’s two flagship wines: Rosso del Conte and Nozze d’Oro.

Location of Vineyards
Located in the mountainous heart of Sicily, Tenuta Regaleali is a world unto itself: a vast estate owned by the Tasca d’Almerita family since 1837 and best known for its fine wines and its internationally recognized cooking school.

Tenuta Capofaro – Located on the small island of Salina, known for its northerly winds and rich volcanic soils.

The Whitaker estate – Located in western Sicily, takes advantage of a coastal ecosystem well suited to the production of white wines with typical Mediterranean floral notes.

Winemaking Philosophy
Since the family owns and produces wines from five different estates, the winemaking process for each is varied according to each estate’s unique terroir and the diverse planting, growing and harvesting conditions its grapes require. Tasca d’Almerita employs both traditional and contemporary winemaking techniques with the latest technological innovations to produce wines with terrific balance and character. Their Rosso del Conte, created in the early 1970s, elevated the quality of the native Nero d’Avola grape through the use of modern winemaking techniques. It is considered the father of modern Sicilian high-end reds.

Schroon Lake: Raga Flute Music with Etienne Rolin

April 17, 2016 at True North Yoga in Schroon Lake.

tracking.php?code=T7KXBbNosjb2wowtPMZrA6

Etienne Rolin, a talented musician and phenomenal performer, graced us with live music at our yoga classes when his was visiting Schroon Lake from France a few summers ago. Now he is returning and has graciously offered to bring his Indian flutes back to the True North Yoga studio for an early evening of Raga.

Raga, which means “color” or “passion” in Sanskrit, is the melodic framework for improvisation within the classical musical styles of India. While Raga plays an important role in Indian music theory, it’s real power is in its ability to tap into the energy of times of day or seasons of the year. It is believed this music can bring rain or start fires!

Join us for an enchanting evening of music!

Suggested donation: $5, but all are welcome!

The French-American, Flutist Composer, teacher Etienne Rolin was raised in California in the fifties during growing into maturity during the “golden age of rock”. After degrees in Music and Philosophy at the University San Francisco then moved to France in the seventies to encounter some of the world great pedagogues and composers : Nadia Boulanger, Pierre Boulez. His eclectic nature has led him to encounter the great masters of jazz and Hindustani music Jerry Bergonzi, Harisparad Charusia.

The Bansuri flute that Etienne has mastered over the past 4 years is a bamboo instrument mixing subtle hues and powerful overtones. The solo recital is a way to connect with the essence of Hindustani raga and to invite the audience to embark upon a sonic journey.

Etienne Rolin currently resides in Bordeaux France, performing, composing, conducting, improvising and teaching following the inspirational lead of creative music making. He has founded numerous groups including Prana Bis Bansuri with tablas and sitar, guitar or accordéon.

JIM GAUDET AND THE RAILROAD BOYS CD RELEASE CONCERT WITH SPECIAL GUEST SARAH MILONOVITCH

FEATURING OPENING ACT SUSAN CATTANEO

Join us for this special night celebrating the official release of The Railroad Boys 5th CD

Jim Gaudet and the Railroad Boys have played four International Bluegrass Music Association festivals that have a history of being voted festivals of the year: Wintergrass, Seattle (WA); Joe Val Boston (MA);Podunk Hartford (CT), Grey Fox in Oak Hill (NY); and were selected to fill a coveted spot in IBMA’s 2013 Bluegrass Ramble in Raleigh, NC. This past spring the band had the honor of appearing on the Music City Roots Live from The Factory PBS broadcast and are looking forward to a return date soon. The band is also anxiously awaiting a feature profile article in an upcoming issue ofthe highly respected “Bluegrass Unlimited”magazine.

The Railroad Boys are still riding on the success of their most recent release “Reasons That I Run”.The band’s fourth CD,”Reasons That I Run”,highlights the latest collection of Jim’s stories and songs. As always, the themes of his work can be widely varied. For this recording the stories can range from not wanting to dance to a DJ at a family get together (I Ain’t Getting’ Up), to the murder of a gypsy boy in the quest of rescuing the girl with the golden hair (Justify My Soul).

lt is the basic philosophy of The RR Boys that audience participation leads to a deeper and more meaningful connection. It is typical to hear the band’s audience enthusiastically whooping it up during songs like their signature “shout along” titled “So Far So Good.” The RR Boy’s closeness with their listeners is obvious no matter where they perform. They consistently close the gap between themselves and their audience, essentially creating one big “down home” family who’ve been brought together by their shared experience through The RR Boys songs and musical stories.

The band supports Gaudet’s song writing and arrangements with just the right amount of gusto and drive. The group consists of Jim Gaudet, guitar, singer, songwriter, Bobby Ristau, upright bass and backing vocals, Sten Isachsen, mandolin and backing vocals, Scott Hopkins, banjo and backing vocals, and special guest Sara Milonovich, fiddle and backing vocals

SUSAN CATTANEO

Cattaneo has been a songwriting professor at Boston’s prestigious Berklee College of Music for 13 years. She’s written songs covered by numerous artists in Nashville, and her tunes helped launch the careers of Jillian Cardanelli and Erica Nicole. Cattaneo, the singer-songwriter, has released three albums of mostly upbeat, catchy pop-country music, “Brave and Wild,” in 2009, “Heaven to Heartache” in 2011 and “Little Blue Sky” in 2012. You’ll hear a blend of country, rock and soul with sparkles of blues and folk – music that would slide into the comfort zone for fans of Bonnie Raitt, Emmylou Harris, Mary Chapin Carpenter or Sheryl Crow.

Rochester: When Experts Disagree: Who Do You Believe?

April 21, 2016 at River Campus Libraries in Rochester.

tracking.php?code=6Z8f5fCAwNM5JrXLbj1EEt

What do you do when your research turns up conflicting conclusions from reputable authorities? How do you sort through claims, decide which studies to believe, and then reach your own conclusions when you’re writing up your results? In this age of Google and social media it’s more challenging than ever to distinguish facts from opinions, ideology and values. Compounding the problem is that today our notion of who “counts” today as an authority is rapidly changing. In fact, a recent article published by the Harvard Business Review heralded what it called “The End of Expertise” (https://hbr.org/2015/10/the-end-of-expertise), exploring how expertise has become commodified. All this makes it trickier than ever for the researcher to determine who and what to trust.

Panelists Bob Berkman (Outreach Librarian, Business), Hayley Clatterbuck (Professor, Philosophy), Nick DiFonzo (Professor, Psychology, RIT), and Katherine Schaefer (Lecturer, Specialist in Scientific and Technical Writing, College Writing Program) will help attendees understand and disentangle key concepts like evidence and authority and provide their advice on how to evaluate conflicting claims. They will also discuss the appropriate role of the researcher when it’s time to present data and reach a conclusion when writing up one’s own work for a class or for publication.

This conversation will be most relevant to undergraduates and those who work with them on research, and all members of the University community are welcome. The discussion and lunch will be hosted by the Carlson Student Research Space on the first floor of Carlson Library, outside the VISTA Collaboratory. RSVPs are not required, but they do guarantee you lunch, which will be available at 11:45am. Please RSVP by Monday, April 18: http://libcal.lib.rochester.edu/event/2513482

Radhanath Swami is a Vaishnava sanyassi (a monk in a Krishna-bhakti lineage) and teacher of the devotional path of Bhakti-yoga. He is author of The Journey Home, a memoir of his search for spiritual truth. His teachings draw from the sacred texts of India such as The Bhagavad-gita, Srimad Bhagavatam, and Ramayana, and aim to reveal the practical application of the sacred traditions, while focusing on the shared essence which unites apparently disparate religious or spiritual paths.

Raghunath born Ray Cappo was a Lower East Side hardcore-punk singer songwriter icon, touring the globe in his teens. In a decadent music scene infested with hard drugs, negativity and intoxication he was an anomaly and a light propounding clean living, positive attitude and vegetarian lifestyle, inspiring tens of thousands of fans internationally. Today he’s an accomplished yogi in many styles, and married with five children. He leads retreats, workshops and yoga teacher trainings around the world. He is an expert at taking the esoteric yoga philosophy and making it understandable and practical for the contemporary world.

Hudson: Illumination of Bhakti Texts with Professor Edwin Bryant

April 15, 2016 at Sadhana Center for Yoga and Meditation in Hudson.

tracking.php?code=2DLoPjXSuP9O5viN4npiAt

The Nårada Bhakti Sütras is a short text attributed to sage Nårada, whom tradition considers to be the foremost authority on the nature of bhakti yoga, the spiritual path of devotion to God. In contrast to the yoga of Patanjali, bhakti yoga is a yoga path involving the activation and immersion of all thoughts in God, rather than the cessation of them; and the offering of the gifts of the world to God, rather than the renouncing of them.

The text covers the lifestyle and various practices associated with bhakti yoga; touches on the nature of Iśvara, God as the recipient of bhakti; and explores the mindset and attitudes cultivated by the bhakta, the yogî performing bhakti, culminating in the madness of ecstatic divine love.

The workshop will consist of a close reading of all 84 sütras of the text.

Edwin Bryant received his Ph.D in Indic languages and Cultures from Columbia University. He taught Hinduism at Harvard University for three years, and is presently the professor of Hinduism at Rutgers University where he teaches courses on Hindu philosophy and religion. He has received numerous awards and fellowships, published six books and authored a number of articles on Vedic history, yoga, and the Krishna tradition. In addition to his academic work for the scholarly community, Edwin’s Penguin World Classics translation of the Srimad Bhagavata Purana, the traditional source for the story of Krishna’s incarnation, is both for Indology specialists as well as students and those interested in Hinduism from the general reading public and the yoga community.

As a personal practitioner of yoga for 35 years, a number of them spent in India studying with traditional teachers, where he returns yearly, Edwin strives to combine academic scholarship and rigor with sensitivity towards traditional knowledge systems. In addition to his academic course load, Edwin currently teaches workshops on the Yoga Sutras, Bhagavad Gita, and Hindu Philosophy at yoga studios and teacher training courses throughout the country. His translation of and commentary on the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali (North Point Press, a division of Farrar, Straus & Giroux, 2009) is specifically dedicated to contributing to the growing body of literature on yoga by providing insights from the major pre-modern commentaries on the text with a view to grounding the teachings in their traditional context.
