Peekskill: Michael Mcdonald – 86th Anniversary Gala Event

June 25, 2016 at Paramount Hudson Valley in Peekskill.

Two notes. That’s all it takes to recognize the voice of Michael McDonald. Distinctive and soulful, it is one of the most yearningly emotive instruments of our times. To this add formidable songwriting and keyboard skills, and you have an artist who has been a singular musical presence for four decades. From ‘70s-era Doobie Brothers classics such as “What A Fool Believes” and solo hits like “I Keep Forgettin’” through two highly-acclaimed Motown albums, genre-busting guest spots and innovative concept shows, the five-time Grammy Award winning McDonald is both timeless and ever-evolving.

Beyond his music, McDonald has long been an active humanitarian. He has lent his talents and energies to many causes and benefits, including MusiCares, the National Council of Alcoholism and Drug Abuse, the 7UP Grammy Signature Schools Program and was part of a star-studded lineup at Kokua For Japan, a concert that raised $1.6 million for tsunami relief.

After moving from his hometown of St. Louis to Los Angeles in the early ‘70s, McDonald honed his talent as a session musician and singer before being invited to join Steely Dan. Over the course of four classic albums, from Katy Lied to Gaucho, McDonald became an integral part of the group’s sound, singing background vocals on FM staples like “Black Friday” and “Peg.”

In the mid-‘70s, McDonald joined The Doobie Brothers, helping the band redefine their funky R & B sound as a singer, keyboardist and songwriter on such Top 40 singles as “Takin’ It To The Streets,” “It Keeps You Runnin’,” “Minute By Minute” and “What A Fool Believes.”

His distinct vocal style also made him one of the world’s most sought-after session singers. Beyond his hits with The Doobies, McDonald has lent his voice to records by an A-Z of artists, including Ray Charles, Aretha Franklin, Elton John, Joni Mitchell, Vince Gill and Grizzly Bear. During the ‘80s and ‘90s, his solo career zoomed from success to success on the wings of evergreen hits like “Sweet Freedom,” “On My Own” (a duet with Patti LaBelle) and the Grammy-winning duet with James Ingram “Yah Mo B There.”

Continuing to explore new vistas, McDonald released his Grammy-nominated, platinum-selling pair of Motown albums in 2003. Then in 2005, he partnered with Hallmark for a special Christmas album, Through The Many Winters, which sold 500,000 copies in its first two weeks.

In 2008 McDonald released the acclaimed crossover album Soul Speak (which hit three different charts simultaneously), and in 2011 received an honary doctorate from Berklee School of Music. Recently he and co-horts Donald Fagen and Boz Scaggs an 11-piece soul supergroup who tour as The Dukes Of September, released their first live DVD.
McDonald continues to tour extensively as a solo artist, with symphonies, altruistic events and plans to tour this summer with Toto.

With a career that encompasses five Grammys, numerous chart successes, personal and professional accolades, as well as collaborations with some of the world’s most prominent artists, Michael McDonald remains an enduring force in popular music.

Opening Guest: Marc Von Em – Marc Von Em is a one man band of sorts, able to create amazing amounts of sound and diversity through his voice and one faithful guitar. His chops are wide-ranging, from delicate finger picking to rambunctious Pete Townsend type strumming. Marc’s guitar serves as more than one instrument as he uses it to create percussive beats and, like Willie Nelson’s and Tom Emmanuel’s, it wears the scars of his passion for playing. Marc is able to seamlessly switch his vibe, his dynamic voice can go from smooth & soaring to smoky scatting. His harmonica playing is equally impressive and he sometimes uses it to accompany Muddy Waters style blues on guitar. His live shows showcase his original music, influenced by folk, funk and blues, with a few choice cover songs woven in. As one reviewer wrote: “If you haven’t seen Marc Von Em perform live, you’re only cheating yourself.”

Soule Monde featuring: Russ Lawton (drums) Ray Paczkowski (key/organ) make up Soule Monde the dynamic duo have been a part of the Trey Anastasio Band since its inception and while not on the road backing TAB at festivals like Bonnaroo, Wannee and Peach Festival they play out as Soule Monde.

Soule Monde is avant funk erupting from the syncopated minds of power drummer Russ Lawton and B3 wizard Ray Paczkowski. An ideal union of swagger and raw talent, the duo is cemented into an indestructible pocket, where bold improvisational leaps by either player are met by a near-telepathic response from the other. This is fluid funk, crafted for the dance floor but supported by an extensive grasp of jazz improvisation.

Paczkowski has an intrepid knowledge of the Hammond B3, playing it as fearlessly as Han Solo flies the Millennium Falcon through an asteroid field, while his left hand lays down bass lines on the clavinet with the ferocity of the meanest four-string, soul-cat.

Lawton is constantly responding to his partner’s attacks – pushing the groove further and deeper while holding the pocket like he’s handcuffed to the snare. Don’t expect the beat to drop with Soule Monde, and at the same time don’t expect to get stuck in one groove. Quite simply, this is the jazz-duo your parents warned you about.

Members of Soule Monde have appeared at Bonnaroo, Austin City Limits, on Saturday Night Live, David Letterman, Jay Leno, Conan O’Brien and Jimmy Fallon, and have shared the stage with Carlos Santana, Rolling Stones, Trey Anastasio, Dave Matthews, Victor Wooten, Mike Gordon

DOPAPOD.
http://dopapod.com/

The Boston born, now generally Northeast based, but ever on-the-go Dopapod has come a long way from their college basement, DIY party roots. While maintaining to be as grassroots as their humble beginnings, the group has earned praise from taste making critics like Rolling Stone, Huffington Post, Jambase, Relix, and The Boston Herald, all the while tending to their ever expanding community of devoted listeners. The past 4 years have individually held the weight of about 150 shows, which have included numerous festival appearances like Bonnaroo, Wakarusa, Summer Camp, Electric Forest, Camp Bisco, Peach Fest, & Gathering Of the Vibes. All of this time on stage with each other has given the band the opportunity to explore the wide variety of influences that has impacted them to be the players they are today. But, don’t be quick to think that the no holds barred experimentation is unguided. While the brush in their hand uses every color, it’s the stroke on the canvas that gives Dopapod a distinct voice in the way of crafty songwriting.

That calculated, compositional mindset and restless nature to never sit too still is what has allowed Dopapod to fully realize their fourth studio release, Never Odd Or Even. Guitarist/vocalist Rob Compa giddily tells, “We really felt that the material this time around represented a big leap forward, not just in the way we’ve been interacting as a band, but in the way our focus has become sharper in paying attention to things like melody, theme, lyrical imagery, and structure – all the elements that make a great song.”

Determined to have that maturity translate in the studio, the band enlisted friend and producer Jason “Jocko” Randall to both engineer and produce the record. Keys/vocalist Eli Winderman couldn’t be happier about how things went. “We lived at his studio for about a month for these sessions and it just clicked right away. Jocko immediately became another member of band in many ways. With his attitude and approach to the recording process, we were able to really dial in the sounds we wanted, get those perfect takes we were aiming for, and have a blast the whole way through.” Released in November of 2014, Never Odd Or Even serves as the spark that the band has ignited to launch them into and exciting 2015 and beyond.

THE ACADEMY BLUES PROJECT:

The Academy Blues Project is a powerhouse R&B quartet that blends funk grooves and the bluesy wail of frontman Mark Levy for an irresistibly eccentric sound, drawing from the likes of Talking Heads and the Mothers of Invention. Their propulsive live shows tend toward the outrageously theatrical, while lyrically they spin offbeat narratives about everything from witches’ hats to shipwrecks to the mysteries of the Hollywood Hills.

The ABP performs regularly in NYC, most recently in its ‘APRIL SHOWERZ’ series at Rockwood Music Hall; at The Bowery Electric, and at Joe’s Pub. The band is currently recording their debut album just down the road from The Big Pink in Woodstock, and at the esteemed Moon Lab Studios in Greenpoint, Brooklyn.

The trance-inducing music of North Africa, most notably Gnawa and Berber music from Morocco, is a fundamental component sound of Club d’Elf, adding spice to the tagine of jazz, electronica, hip hop and other flavors which the band incorporates. The acclaimed Boston-based collective is centered around Mike Rivard, one of Boston’s most in-demand bass players, and features Casablanca-born Brahim Fribgane, who brings to his music the rich and varied musical styles he grew up with – North African, Gnawa, Berber, Arabic and Andalusian music. “The roaring avant-funk of electric-era Miles (and) the legato drift of the Grateful Dead…manic Berber bop, hypnotic Moroccan gnawa and blissful electronica are usually present in the mix as well. Heady music that doesn’t neglect the tail.” – Time Out New York

B4TB is a 5-piece collective of impassioned musicians, dedicated to capturing the accessibility of pop and the soul of rock&roll in original music. The group is fronted by powerhouse lead vocalist Aubrey Haddard “who sings with fiery, ripped-speaker, throat-torching grit that must be seen to be understood,” (John Burdick, The New Paltz Times), and supported by an eclectic rhythm section consisting of Sam Smith’s bold bass melodies and songwriting, hypnotic ambiance provided by Lukas Brenard on the keys, Pierce Allen’s extensive range from chicken pickin to heart-wrenching solos on guitar and the undeniable pocket of Roger LaRochelle’s commanding groove. The group’s debut album “The Ides of March,” released May 2015, illustrates the large variety of genres and backgrounds being brought to the table, while the second album, scheduled to be released in Summer of 2016, will prove to be a pure representation of this band’s authentic sound. With a split home base between Boston and the Hudson Valley Region, B4TB is easy to catch live and consistently touring in the North East. Combining tight-knit groove, old-school blues and new-wave R&B, this band breathes life into a whole new style of soul.

The Vibe Theory combines soulful vocals, soaring blues riffs, and funk-driven rhythms into a unique sound that is always about the groove. Channeling heavyweights like The Meters, Jimi Hendrix, James Brown, John Scofield, D’Angelo and The Derek Trucks Band, Sonic LoveBot’s style it’s own thing–intriguingly layered yet astonishingly simple.
