New York: Appropriate Citations

April 11, 2017 at Abrons Arts Center in New York.

Citation and adaptation have been fertile and even groundbreaking creative processes. Cultural appropriations have also masked power dynamics and violent processes of dispossession. How are performance makers navigating citational and appropriative processes with intention and within a range of proximities and intimacies with their sources? How do these artistic practices contend with and complicate colonial and extractive procedures?

Moderated and organized by Hadar Ahuvia and Ali Rosa-Salas
With Yoshiko Chuma, Malik Gaines & Alexandro Segade, Will Rawls, Rosy Simas, and Reggie Wilson

Dansville: Bleach Bonanza – Dansville

April 11, 2017 at Sam’s Place in Dansville.

Create a one of a kind t-shirt design using freezer paper, bleach, and water! We will learn how to make a stencil, apply it to our shirts, and spritz on the bleach! The effects are different each time and vary from one color shirt to the next. Bring a 100% cotton t-shirt (NOT white) and an image that you might like to use (basic designs, without a lot of detail work best). Warning: The effects of bleach are permanent, so be sure to wear old clothes. Further Warning: You might want to create more than one shirt! Must be enrolled in 4-H. RSVP no later than April 7th by contacting Renee at rh445@cornell.edu.

Seneca Falls: Artist Talk – Janis Long

March 18, 2017 at Women’s Rights National Historical Park in Seneca Falls.

Women’s Rights National Historical Park is pleased to showcase a jewelry exhibit by Janis Long for the month of March in celebration of Women’s History Month. Located on the second floor Art Exhibit room in the park’s Visitor Center. Janis will be giving a talk on her eclectic jewelry designs on Saturday, March 18 at 2:00 PM.

The Artist Janis Long, a native of Ontario, Canada and currently a resident of Keuka Lake began creating one of a kind jewelry pieces 25 years ago by using vintage buttons, belt buckles, bakelite game pieces and other found objects. She later performed her magic with sterling silver and copper wire and metal to capture the beauty of her semi-precious stones and to create works that catch the eye. The secret to her distinctive work is found in her attention to detail and by applying various types of patinas and textures to her metal pieces.

She has shown her work in numerous museums, art galleries and gift shops in the states of Connecticut, Pennsylvania, New Jersey and New York. In addition to her design work, Janis has taught many classes and workshops.

Today, she is completely captivated by polymer clay where Janis finds pleasure in creating jewelry pieces that make a statement, geometric in shape and full of movement. Janis is inspired by many forms of art, the work of other jewelry artists and by the colors that come from nature.
