Queens: Immigrant Beat Vol. 3 – Love Is Not Reserverd: Music in Solidarity

July 17, 2015 at IMI Corona, Queens in Queens.

— Español Abajo —

IMI Corona, M.A.K.U Soundsystem, and Interference Archive present:

Love Is Not Reserved: Music In Solidarity

A big part of learning how to be in Solidarity is unlearning what we have been taught about Love. We are taught that love is reserved for those who are like us, our blood families, “our people” and that love should be romantic or familial. We know that expanding who and how we love is essential to build the world we want to live in. Solidarity means learning how to love each other’s complexities, nuances and baggage, as people who have been oppressed and want liberation for all. That process is messy, and essential. It is not an easy love, it is an intentional decision to build movements with other people, despite the circumstances. You are in it knowing you might change, you are leaving your comfort, leaving what you may have because there is no other way to live unless we’re all there, unless there’s liberation for all.

For the Immigrant Beat Vol. 3 we invite you to think about songs in solidarity. Come listen to and share music, dance, hang out, hear powerful stories of reaching across borders and loving without reservations. Come to think about what it means to be in solidarity with the struggles for justice that people face in NYC, our home countries and beyond.

This event will also be the opening of The Window Project: Rest In Power. This will be the first of 9 window displays at IMI Corona that will launch a year-long project honoring the lives of Black and Brown victims of Police Brutality and working to build solidarity and challenge anti-black racism. The first window has been produced through a collaboration of: Viviana Peralta, Patricia María, Stephano Espinoza Galarza, and Marissa Campiz.

English – Spanish Interpretation will be available at this event

Queens: Passport Thursdays Outdoor International Dance, Music & Film Series: South Africa

August 20, 2015 at Queens Museum in Queens.

The Queens Museum’s summertime staple, Passport Thursdays: International Dance, Music, and Film Series, returns for another exciting season featuring some of the many international locales that fuel Queens’ cultural and artistic vitality. This year’s adventure includes stops in the Caribbean, Taiwan, India, Colombia, Korea, and South Africa. So leave your baggage at home and bring a picnic blanket out to Flushing Meadows Corona Park for an evening in the shadow of the majestic Unisphere. There will be free artmaking workshops for families before the films start, our galleries and café will remain open until 8pm, and we won’t let a little rain spoil the fun, we’ll just move the whole event indoors.

And if coming to the Park is a little out of the way, this year we are partnering with the Rockaway Waterfront Alliance to bring three of the films out to Rockaway. Destination Rockaway: Passport International Film Series will present three selections from Passport Thursdays in the Rockaway Community Garden. So whether you prefer the beach or the park, we hope you’ll join us on our journey of global sights and sounds.

Music: Azanian People’s Movement

Bandleader Lesedi Ntsane was born and bred in Kwa-Thema, Gauteng in South Africa, and has been playing the trumpet since the age of 4. In 2011, he moved to New York City to further his studies at the prestigious New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music. For two years he worked at Jazz at Lincoln Center as part of the Webop Educational program and in 2014 performed at Carnegie Hall with David Kramer. His group now regularly plays at Madiba Harlem.

Film: Felix (Roberta Durrant, South Africa, 2013, 97min. In English and Xhosa with Eng ST)

Described as “Billy Elliott with Cape jazz,” the film follows 14-year-old Felix as he dreams of becoming a saxophonist like his late father. When he leaves his township to take up a scholarship at an elitist private school, he defies his mother and turns to two aging members of his father’s old band to help him prepare for the school jazz concert.

Music: Taiwanese Music Ensemble of New York

Founded by Taiwanese-American guqin player Shih-hua (Judy) Yeh, the ensemble was organized by a group of professional musicians and performed widely around Eastern United States. The ensemble is also dedicated to the education of young people, performed frequently in the neighborhood.

Film: Zone Pro Site: The Moveable Feast (Zung Pou Si, Taiwan, 2013, 145min, Mandarin with English ST)

More than 20 years ago, there were 3 outdoor banquet (ban-doh) master chefs who dominated the catering business in Taiwan. However, business has been in decline since Taiwan’s economic decline. The late Master Fly Spirit wanted to pass the family recipes and culinary skills on to his only daughter, Wan, but she runs away from the family business to become a fashion model. Nevertheless, the indebted Wan is destined to take up mission she once shunned by joining forces with her equally down-on-her-luck mother to win grand prize in a national catering contest.
