New York: Open Mic Fundraiser for Domestic Violence Survivors

On December 2nd, the CU Muslim Students Association invites you to join us for an Open Mic in our efforts to fundraise and contribute to the work being done by Sakh. All proceeds will be donated to their organization. [For More Information Visit: http://www.sakhi.org/]

The theme of this year’s event is Safety: in & out of Community. We invite anyone interested to come perform poetry, songs, monologues, stories, or any other work focusing on themes of safety, faith, social justice, solidarity, charity, etc. We will also be showcasing artwork and photography within the performance space.

The performances will be held in the Diana Center 2nd Floor Student Dining room from 8-10 pm.

**This year, we are joining NYU in raising funds for Sakhi for South Asian Women, which works with survivors, communities, and institutions to eradicate domestic violence.

Sakhi’s goals are to:

1. create a safe place with a full range of culturally-sensitive, language-specific information, support, services, and advocacy for South Asian women facing abuse in their lives; and,

2. work to inform, actively engage, and mobilize the South Asian community in the movement to end violence against women forever.

Hailing from Washington Heights, New York City, Karina Pasian is one of the industry’s most impressive and accomplished emerging young artists on the rise. Beginning her career at only sixteen years old, Karina garnered the attention of industry heavyweights early on. In 2005 she signed a deal with Def Jam Recordings at the age of thirteen through LA Reid and released her debut album “First Love” in 2008. Karina’s debut record received a Grammy nomination for Best Contemporary R&B Album.

A natural born performer and classically trained pianist/vocalist since the age of three, Karina Pasian had the passion and professionalism of a seasoned artist at a young age. At twelve years old, she performed at Quincy Jones’ We Are The Future concert in Rome, and by the time she’d matured to her mid-teens, performed at The White House for President George W. Bush in celebration of Black Music Month, and

A graduate of the Professional Performing Arts School in New York, Karina couples her raw talent with an impressive educational background. On top of being multi-talented she’s multi-lingual, and student of ballet for twelve years. Karina speaks three languages (Russian, English, and Spanish).

Accomplishing so much at an early age, the best is yet to come. Karina Pasian has the raw talent and maturity that proves she is a force to be reckoned with.

Using illustrative before and after photos of various projects she has executed throughout her long career, landscape designer Jan Johnsen shares specific tips to enhance your garden. Techniques include ‘Lure of the Sheltered Corner,’ ‘The Principle of Three Depths,’ ‘Raising the Canopy’ and many more. Students will be given a handout listing all tips discussed in class. Design tips that anyone – professional or not – can use.

Sleepy Hollow: Pulitzer Prize Winner, Michael Cunningham, Reads

Michael Cunningham is the author of the novels A Home at the End of the World, Flesh and Blood, The Hours (winner of the Pen/Faulkner Award & Pulitzer Prize), The Snow Queen, Specimen Days, and By Nightfall, as well as the non-fiction book, Land’s End: A Walk in Provincetown. His new book, A Wild Swan and Other Tales (illustrated by Yuko Shimizu) was published in November 2015. He is a Senior Lecturer at Yale and lives in New York. He will read a selection of his work. A Q&A and book signing will follow the reading. Do not miss the fiction reading of 2016! Lauren Acampora will intoduce Cunningham.

Rye Brook: Jill Sobule w/ guest Emilyn Brodsky

We are pleased to announce the return of Jill Sobule to Music at the Mansion. Jill played at our very first show in November 2013 and helped establish our concert venue, now in its 4th year.

Jill Sobule is a Denver-born singer, songwriter, storyteller, guitarist and gypsy. Over seven albums and nearly two decades of recording, Jill has mused on topics such as the death penalty, anorexia, shoplifting, reproduction, the French resistance movement, adolescence and the Christian right.

She’s performed with Neil Young, Billy Bragg, Steve Earle, Cyndi Lauper, Tom Morello and Warren Zevon and inducted Neil Diamond into the Songwriter’s Hall of Fame. She can be seen live as a solo performer as well as the co-star of the “Jill & Julia Show,” an unusual and mesmerizing combination of song and storytelling in collaboration with comedian/actress Julia Sweeney. She also served as songwriter/composer for the hit Nickelodeon network show “Unfabulous” during that show’s three-season run. She composed the music for the off-Broadway show “Prozak and Platypus” and her songs have appeared in a multitude of films including “Mind the Gap,” in which Jill herself co-starred. She has been a political troubadour for NPR stations across America and most recently performed original music at the keynote session for Netroots Nation. Jill is a longtime participant as well as musical contributor at TED.

Emilyn Brodsky is a singer/songwriter who has performed with The Magnetic Fields, Amanda Palmer, The Hold Steady, TV on the Radio, and many more. You may have seen her sing songs off her critically-acclaimed album “Emilyn Brodsky Eats Her Feelings” on HBO’s “Girls” and Fusion’s “The Chris Gethard Show.” She lives in New York City in an ancient mansion with a coven of witches. Emilyn enjoys tea, essential oils, and meat on the bone. Her new album, “Emilyn Brodsky’s Digestion,” was released in October 2016 on Dead Stare Records.

Tickets for this show are $27 in advance and $32 at the door. Doors open at 7PM. Refreshments are available at the show, including beer and wine
