New York: Ari Silverstein Presents The Encore Series: Michelle Walker

July 24, 2015 at Cafe Noctambulo at Pangea in New York.

Doors open at 6PM for dinner
Shows at 7PM and 9PM

New York based jazz vocalist Michelle Walker is a versatile singer blessed with a distinctive, provocative,

whiskey-soaked tone. Walker is a charismatic singer that uses an artful blend of blues, bebop, swing and

soul with playful rhythmic expressiveness; bending the lines and pushing the boundaries of jazz vocal art.

With rich colors and adventurous flexibility, she moves easily from a dark, deep tone to a mid-range,

swinging lilt. She has a refreshing approach to arranging often easily recognizable contemporary songs.

Highlights of her career include multiple tours in Europe, performing in the Lincoln Center Women in Jazz

Festival, touring with jazz vocal legend Mark Murphy and performing at the White House for the lighting of

the National Christmas Tree. Dave Nathan at AllAboutJazz.com says, “Walker demonstrates an

extraordinary degree of musicality…” Michelle is often compared to Cassandra Wilson, Nina Simone and

Betty Carter in style and tone but has develop her own unique sound and voice. She studied classical voice

at University of Maryland and jazz performance at Amsterdam Music Conservatory in Holland. Michelle also

holds her Master Degree in Economics and Public Policy from American University.

What the Critics Are Saying…

Washington Post

Mike Joyce

Walker…has seductive charm…

“Slow Down” is more than a title, it’s an invitation that’s

hard to resist…”

Baltimore Music Monthly

Lisa Donaldson

Michelle Walker essentially entices with her vocal signature of relaxed phrasing and a bluesy frenzy – similar to vocal

stylings of Lady Day. Michelle is an original that truly has her own style and innermost story. How wonderful are the things

that we artists can create when we stick to our own voices.”

All About Jazz

Dave Nathan

Walker possesses a set of strong vocal chords which she uses with remarkable restraint…it’s obvious that she has the

physical equipment to belt out everything she sings…using her vocal powers like a small hand gun rather than as a howitzer.

She also demonstrates an extraordinary degree of musicality as she adds subtle alterations to melody lines, going up when

one expects her to go down and other ear catching devices.”

New York: For the Love of Judy HOT Festival 2015

July 29, 2015 at Dixon Place in New York.

For The Love of Judy is a story of a gay boy who dreamed of being a singer and his dysfunctional upbringing. This autobiographical show, based on the life of creator BT Shea, takes us on a journey of how he found his voice through the dark twists and turns of drag life, and with the help of a lot of sequins, lipstick, a glitter of hope and the music of Judy Garland, ultimately realized his dreams.

From MargOH!:

When I starting writing this show I realized for the first time I’d be telling the whole truth about my life. As a boy I was asked to keep secrets about the inner workings of my family that included, abuse, adultery and neglect. This led to a lifetime struggle with low self-esteem and trying to understand who I really was while also coming to terms with my sexual orientation amongst all of this turmoil. I realized that truth would be the only thing to save me – to save all of us.

I turned to music as a source of comfort and the divas became my friends. Barbra, Bette, Diana, Olivia, and Cher were always there for me but Judy Garland was my Queen and my salvation. Her songs became the soundtrack of my life. There was something about her music – stories of love, stories of despair (sometimes both in the same song!) but what always existed was that message of hope of getting over that rainbow. That allowed me to express my feelings and led me to step behind her voice and became my own (drag) Queen MargOH! Channing.

I’ve always said I’ve learned everything I know about performance through being Judy Garland. By becoming her she gave me a voice and through her voice came the courage to use my own and finally speak my truth. I hope you’ll come take this journey with me for the love of Judy. XOXO MargOH!
