New York: Saul Williams / Kimberly Nichole

August 17, 2016 at Marcus Garvey Park in New York.

This is a FREE, non-ticketed event.

Saul Williams

Saul Williams new release Martyr Loser King is a multimedia project that engages the digital dialogue between the First and Third Worlds, and the global street sounds that yoke the two. “In Senegal, I was buying iPhones for $20, Beats for $10, because they get all the influx from China, with no regulation,” Williams explains. “So everyone’s online. Everyone’s high tech.” He sights Beyoncé, Fredo Santana, and Haitian field recordings as musical inspirations for his self-produced sixth album, straining trap hi-hats and mbira strokes together for a nuanced, entirely original sound. “I’m just letting you know what I’m reading and seeing while I’m writing. When I’m writing, the music leads.” After gaining global fame for his poetry and writings at the turn of the century, Williams has performed in over 30 countries and read in over 300 universities, with invitations that have spanned from the White House, the Sydney Opera House, Lincoln Center, The Louvre, The Getty Center, Queen Elizabeth Hall, to countless villages, townships, community centers, and prisons across the world. The Newburgh, New York native gained a BA from Morehouse and an MFA from Tisch, and has gone on to record with Nine Inch Nails and Allen Ginsburg, as well as countless film and television appearances. The release of ‘MartyrLoserKing’ comes with a new world tour and to-be-announced collaborations with several artists, producers and writers.

Kimberly Nichole

Exploding on the national scene on season eight of The Voice, Kimberly Nichole garnered superlative praise from the likes of Pharrell Williams, Christina Aguilera, Lionel Richie, Mark Ronson and Reba McEntire with her show-stopping performances, stylish presence and vocal power. Fans clamored for the rock-and-soul music and led her to the iTunes’ Top 20 three weeks in a row and even landed her on the Billboard 100 Charts! Born and bred in Seattle, Washington, Kimberly Nichole moved to New York City where she launched her career. National and international performances soon followed, allowing her to share the stage with such artists as Slash, Living Colour, Alice Smith, Janelle Monae, Aloe Blacc, Bilal and English rock band The Heavy. Her mesmerizing performance style captured the attention and support of Quincy Jones, Ashford & Simpson and fashion savant Andre Leon Talley, who was so taken with her talent and fashion-forwardness that he invited her to the VOGUE offices and featured her in the magazine. Her proudest moment has been writing, releasing and self funding her debut album The Yellow Brick Journey. After hearing her music, director George C. Wolfe personally selected her to be the featured rock performer in his film You Are Not You, which stars Oscar-winner Hilary Swank. In 2012 she was the recipient of the ASCAP Foundation’s “Reach Out and Touch” Award, which is given to promising songwriters. Kimberly Nichole continues to perform with her band and is recording new music for her next album The Lonely Bones.

New York: Live at Penn Plaza: Kendra Morris

September 26, 2016 at Plaza33 in New York.

Kendra Morris recalls singers who straddled soul and rock during the early ’70s, such as Ruth Copeland and Chaka Khan, while her contemporaries include the likes of Mayer Hawthorne, Alice Russell, and Leela James. Morris’s musical taste was developed through her parents’ record collection, a library heavy on late-60s and early-70s soul and funk. During her childhood Morris’s main companion was her karaoke machine, which she also used for the sake of recording songs on her own, and self-released a pair of EPs: This Won’t Hurt a Bit (2007) and Milk and Cookies Never Lie (2008). Her first proper recording, a self-titled EP (2010), was recorded with producer and multi-instrumentalist Jeremy Page (of That Handsome Devil). After touring with legendary guitarist Dennis Coffey and releasing a series of singles which included “Concrete Waves,” whose b-side was remixed by DJ Premier, Morris released the album Banshee (2012) on Wax Poetics. In 2013, Morris returned with the covers album Mockingbird. The title track “Banshee” was used prominently in the Showtime hit series Ray Donovan, while her cover of Pink Floyd’s “Shine On You Crazy Diamond” found itself in the trailer for major motion picture Dead Man Down. In between extensive international touring and promotion for Banshee throughout 2013 and 2014, Morris worked on a small side project band with friends Scarlett Johansson, Julia Haltigan and Holly Miranda, releasing one single called “Candy.”

#LiveatPennPlaza features live music on Monday and Tuesday evenings, 6 – 7:30pm and Tuesday and Thursday during the lunch hour, 12:30 – 1:30pm.

Monday nights feature soul, funk, and blues bands.

New York: Writers Block 2016 Michael Small: Keep Playing

October 17, 2016 at Howl Happening in New York.

October 17, 2016 / 7 PM / Free

An Evening of One-Act Plays

Part of the 2016 Writers Block staged reading and performance festival

When rapidly aging parents have just one wish—to stay in their own home—a good son will try to help them do exactly what they want—if only they’d freakin’ cooperate. Keep Playing chronicles a family’s struggle to maintain their love and control amid the chaos of old age. Plus, two other short plays: One Minute, about a victim of the micro-theater craze, and Held Up, about a strange encounter enabled by a subway breakdown.

Small co-wrote the book for the musical The IT Girl, which premiered at Off Broadway’s York Theater in 2001. It is performed regionally, including a well-received production in Vancouver in October 2015. His farce Kaboom!, starring Ray Wills and directed by B.T. McNicholl, played to packed houses in the 2008 New York International Fringe Festival. Other works include Beautiful Foolish Arms (Naked Angels reading series) and The Cool Club, first performed in a site-specific production at CBGB 313. Four previous works had readings in the HOWL Festival: The History of Light (2015), Steve Cohen and the Sweet Spot (2011), We’ll Be Fine (2010), and Got You (2009). A former writer and editor at People magazine, Small later ran websites for Entertainment Weekly and Rolling Stone. He now works at NBC News Digital.

TICKETS: $20 Suggested Donation

The staged readings series is a benefit for the Actors Fund’s Howl! HELP, providing emergency financial assistance and social service support to artists who have made or continue to make their careers in New York’s East Village and Lower East Side arts communities. Howl! HELP is administered by the Actors Fund and 100% ticket sales benefit the Actors Fund.
