Laurie Woolever is a freelance writer and editor, and works for Anthony Bourdain under the catch-all title of “gatekeeper.” She has written for the New York Times, Lucky Peach, Saveur, GQ, Food & Wine, Wine Spectator, Los Angeles Times and more.
Woolever co-authored the cookbook Appetites, to be published in fall 2016, with Anthony Bourdain.

Melissa Clark is on staff at the New York Times, where she writes the popular Dining Section column, A Good Appetite. In addition, Clark has written 35 cookbooks, many of them in collaboration with some of New York’s most celebrated chefs. Her next cookbook, Dinner, will be published by Clarkson Potter in 2017.

Newburgh: George Washington’s Birthday Celebration

February 14, 2016 at Washington’s Headquarters State Historic Site in Newburgh.

You are cordially invited to our George Washington Birthday Celebration at Washington’s Headquarters State Historic Site on Saturday, February 13th, Sunday, February 14th and Monday, February 15th, from 12:00 PM until 4:00 PM.

Each day will begin with General George Washington cutting his own birthday cake. Then, the day will be filled with music, military demonstrations, crafts, and historical presentations, with something for each member of the family.

All three days the General will be greeting visitors in his office at the historic headquarters. Balladeer Thad McGregor will be offering musical entertainment in the dining room of the headquarters, accompanied by his limberjack. On the grounds, reenactors will be performing military drills culminating at the end of the day with a review of the troops by the General himself. Troops that will be present each day are: Saturday – the 5th New York Regiment, Sunday – Lamb’s Artillery and Morgan’s Rifles, and Monday – the 5th Connecticut Regiment.

Pick up some interesting historical knowledge with talks each day. For example, on Saturday, Don Hagist will speak about “The Revolution’s Last Men: the Soldiers Behind the Photographs.” On Sunday, George Washington reenactor, John Koopman, will talk about his book, “George Washington at War – 1776.” On Monday, award winning author, Selene Castrovilla will speak about her children’s book, “Revolutionary Friends – General George Washington and the Marquis de Lafayette.” These and other talks are scheduled throughout the weekend.

Also, children and adults alike are invited to create their own bookplate to use in their books at home. Admission is free, though donations are welcome. Call 845-562-1195 for details and a full schedule of events.

Brooklyn: Intro to the Tarot: I

Got your first deck and don’t know where to start? Heard about Tarot and curious how it works? Or maybe you’re just ready to round out your spiritual life with a new set of divination skills? Join us for a beginner-friendly, three-part series on how to read Tarot cards, with Catland card reader Blue June!

The first class will introduce students to the concept of divination, the 78 card Tarot deck and its origins, and how to access and trust your intuition as a response to the cards. We’ll be learning from the Rider-Waite deck; bring any deck if you have one!

$15 per class
$40 for all three

Blue June began serious training with Courtney Webber, author of “Tarot for One: The Art of Reading for Yourself” and continued her studies over the years with a variety of notable mentors such as Damon Stang and Brian Oaster. She now teaches a 3 class “Intro to Tarot” course yet remains a committed student of her craft.

Blue is a leader in the Pagan Environmental Coalition, teacher of tarot and energetic cleansing, owner of both Magick Talismans Tarot and The Broom Closet, and is the creator/curator of the celebrated monthly Full Moon Market of curiosities and magick.

Queensbury: West Mountain’s Countryman Challenge

April 02, 2016 at West Mountain Ski Area in Queensbury.

West Mountain’s Countryman Challenge (open to all ages) will be an on-snow mountain race (5K) with snow obstacles that will leave from the courtyard near the Main Lodge. Registration, on Saturday, April 2nd, will take place in the Main Lodge from 12-3 pm. Online registration is now available at Finishright.com. Race fees include a T-shirt and BBQ Dinner with Live Music and Bon Fire! We will have a shorter course with obstacles available to our littlest participants following the race on the Bunny Hill. The cost for the Bunny Hill MINI Challenge is free to participate. The event is sponsored by Keeler MINI and organized by West Mountain Racing and West Mountain School, West Mountain’s non profit organization.

Rochester: Romeo & Juliet Auditions!

February 15, 2016 at St. John Fisher College in Rochester.

The Rochester Shakespeare Players & Wallbyrd Theater Company are thrilled to be joining forces for their 2016 Summer Bowl performance of Romeo and Juliet – breathing new life into one of Shakespeare’s most memorable plays, and one of the world’s most immortal love stories. This production will be staged at the Highland Park Bowl from July 8-23rd (No performances Mondays and Thursday evenings)

Directed by Virginia Monte.
Stage Combat Direction by Alec Barbour.
Choreographed by Anne Wilcox.

Auditions will be held on the St. John Fisher College Campus

DATES OF AUDITIONS:
Monday Feb 15; 6-9 p.m., Cleary Family Auditorium in Kearney Bldg.
Tuesday, Feb 16; 6-10 p.m. Basil Building Room 135

Auditioners are asked to attend one of the auditions dates listed above. Callbacks will be scheduled for Wednesday the 24th with location TBA. There will be three parts to this audition process. First round will include an acting and dance segment. Callbacks will include an acting and combat segment.

Auditioners are encouraged to bring…
•A prepared monologue of their choice (contemporary and/or period appropriate). Audition Sides will be provided.
•Comfortable, movement ready clothes and footwear.
•A headshot and resume (if you have not emailed one in advance).
•A list of all rehearsal conflicts. We do our best to work around conflicts, but only if they are identified early.

New York: A Silver and Black Superbowl !

February 07, 2016 at Silver and Black Empire: The NYC Home of Raider Nation in New York.

The 2015 NFL Season comes to it’s conclusion , with the ULTIMATE event in Sport! While our boys are not playing, It’s out last chance to celebrate the sport we love and the season we have had as we watch the Denver Broncos take on the Carolina Panthers . We are of course, will be rooting for the Boys from Carolina. ( they wear silver and black, that blue though…) This is probably going to be our last chance to see Peyton Manning play the game of Football, so.. that’s another reason to celebrate. I’ll be pulling out the game day drink specials all day and all night, as well as our halftime buffet . It’s been a great season, Can’t wait to see how it ends. It’s going to be a long time before we get to watch Football again…Let’s end this season our way !
