Remember middle school, where even the most popular kids had to deal with cliques and conflict and adolescent angst? Or maybe you’re still living in that world of roller coaster emotions? Either way, Running to Places’ (R2P) “13 The Musical,” is a must-see show. Offering humor, fabulous songs (by Jason Robert Brown, no less) and a powerhouse cast, the play runs July 9-18 at the Kitchen Theatre Company in Ithaca:

Evan Goldman (Jasper Fearon) is prepping for his bar mitzvah when his parents divorce and his mother whisks him from the familiar world of New York City to the wilds of Indiana, where no one has any idea what a bar mitzvah is. Evan makes some friends—eccentric Patrice (Keara Byron) and muscular dystrophy-stricken Archie (Max Avramis)—but Evan would rather be “in” with the popular kids, like football star Brett (Ari Cummings), beautiful Kendra (Kendra Walkuski) and the scheming Lucy (Cali Newman). But it all goes horribly, hilariously wrong when Evan gets sucked into the chaos of middle school courting.

“The story is agonizingly familiar to anyone who’s lived through that time of life,” says Joey Steinhagen, R2P artistic director. “The main character feels pressured to be popular at the expense of people who genuinely care about him, because he misunderstands what friendship is—something he will learn over the course of the show.”

Steinhagen says the talent in the show is “staggering,” with all but one – lead Jasper Fearon–veterans of R2P. And when Steinhagen calls Fearon a rock star, he means it literally: Fearon performs around Ithaca in the band MonkeySquids. “You won’t believe he’s a seventh grader,” says Steinhagen.

With an all-teenage cast, R2P catches the spirit of the original age-appropriate cast of the Broadway production. “The actors can bring something to this show that no one else can, because they’re living it,” explains Steinhagen. “We love picking plays that play into the strengths of what makes R2P unique, our youth contingency.”

The cast of 20 is small for an R2P show, but large for the Kitchen Theatre. This will be R2P’s first full play at the Kitchen, and the company has enthusiastically embraced working in a 3-sided venue. The set consists of cubes reconfigured to represent different locations, a simple, imagination-based design by Deb Drew that makes the most of the limited floor space.

The show will serve as a kick-off event to R2P’s July fundraiser, a crowdsourced effort to raise $30,000 and ensure that participation will remain free for all kids in R2P’s next season. “Eliminating all fees for R2P participation has been wildly successful,” says Steinhagen. “Fifty percent of the kids who auditioned this season were new to the company. This fundraiser will enable us to build on that success.” Donations can be made at runningtoplaces.org or at bit.ly/supportR2P.

The creative team for “13” includes Jeremey Pletter, resident music director; Rachel Frank, costume coordinator, and Fatima Sowe, choreographer.

“13” is exclusively sponsored by CSP Management with scholarship support from M&T Bank and an anonymous fund at the Community Foundation of Tompkins County, with additional grant support from the Park Foundation, the Howland Fund at the Community Foundation of Tompkins County, and the Community Arts Partnership of Tompkins County, with season-long support from CSP Management.

In order to accommodate in the Kitchen Theatre the large audiences that R2P shows draw, “13: The Musical” will run for ten performances, July 9-12, Thursday-Saturday, 7 pm, Saturday and Sunday 2 pm; July 15-18, Wednesday-Saturday, 7 pm, Saturday, 2 pm; Tickets are $15 the day of the show, $13 if purchased in advance, $11 for groups of ten or more, and are available at www.runningtoplaces.org and at the door. Call 607-216-8750 for more information.

Ithaca: Memorial Circle for Gaza: From Witness to Solidarity

July 14, 2015 at Dewitt Park in Ithaca.

Jewish Voice for Peace Ithaca invites you to join us in Sean Greenwood (Dewitt) park for an interfaith memorial and call to action.

This event will commemorate two anniversaries:

Israel’s massive assault on Gaza, where over 2,285 Palestinians (1,485 civilians) and 71 Israelis (four civilians) were killed, July 8-August 26, 2014

Palestinian civil society’s call for boycott, divestment and sanctions (BDS), July 9, 2005

The program will include music, prayers, poetry and a ritual to remember and bear witness to all of those who were killed last summer during Israel’s “Operation Protective Edge.” During the Israeli military’s assault on Gaza for seven weeks last summer, over 2,285 Palestinians were killed. Of these, according the United Nations, 1,483 were civilians, including 521 children; 71 Israelis were killed, of whom 4 were civilians, including one child. We will also express our opposition to the ongoing human rights violations, military occupation of the West Bank, East Jerusalem, and Gaza and state of siege in Gaza.

We will recognize the importance of boycott, divestment and sanctions strategies being initiated and implemented throughout the world to support an end to Israel’s occupation, discriminatory policies and human rights violations. These nonviolent strategies were effective in the struggles to end legalized racial segregation in the United States and apartheid in South Africa.

Co-sponsors so far include: The Ithaca Chapter of Jewish Voice for Peace, the Ithaca Committee for Justice in Palestine, Episcopal Peace Fellowship, The Tikkun v’Or Israel-Palestine Social Justice Workgroup, the Fellowship of Reconciliation, Ithaca Veterans for Peace, and more.

Hailey Wojcik’s (voy-check) darkly witty lyrics and fierce aesthetic have earned her the title of “the Wednesday Addams of her genre” (The Deli Magazine), and My Old Kentucky Blog notes that she “sounds mighty fine at volumes that may disturb others who may be in the room with you.” Her music and videos have caught the attention of Magnet, After Ellen, MTV, Logo, and Girls Get Busy Zine. She has co-directed several music videos, many of which included her own stop-motion animation. Her debut album, Diorama, was produced by Dan Romer in 2010 (Beasts of the Southern Wild, Jenny Owen Youngs, Jukebox the Ghost). In the intervening years since releasing Diorama, Hailey pursued a side project, the garage rock two-piece, WOJCIK, which released an eponymous EP and an LP entitled Wise Blood, in 2012 and 2013, respectively. The Book of Beasts EP comes out on March 3rd, 2015 on cassette with Wiener Records.

Ithaca: Gonga Yoga at Sacred Root Kava Lounge & Tea Bar

July 25, 2015 at Sacred Root Kava Lounge & Tea Bar in Ithaca.

Gonga Yoga
with Lennessa Shantaya
and The Gong Temple

Saturday July 25th
2:00 – 4:00pm

Gonga Yoga is an exploration of Self through sound and movement – a gentle and deep approach to, body/mind awareness, and relaxation. Harmonic sound practitioners, Ron and Michelle Angel, will combine their music with Lennessa’s yoga expertise to create a unique and powerful experience. You will be immersed in healing sound through the use of large gongs, singing bowls, flutes, harmonium and the Halo handpan drum.
Following the hour-long yoga class there will be an hour of deep savasana: lying on your mat, you will be saturated with healing sound, as Ron and Michelle Angel, of The Gong Temple, play their sacred instruments in a Tranceformance called Harmonic Immersion, allowing you to access ultimate relaxation and a deep sense of peace.

Lennessa serves as the director of the Yoga School in Ithaca. She believes that yoga has something potent to offer everyone: a vehicle for transforming lives in the way that only true love, true community, and true yoga can.

When they married 5 years ago, Ron and Michelle decided to buy a gong as a wedding gift to each other. They had taken different musical paths to reach that point. Michelle has played flute and harmonium for many years and is passionate about kirtan. Ron is a drummer and a ceramic artist who makes drums. Together, they are The Gong Temple, and they have been working and playing together bi-coastally as they travel full-time in their motorhome.

Please bring a yoga mat and pillow or blanket.
