New York: Collaborations in Feminist & Anti-Colonial Human Rights Advocacy

February 28, 2017 at Center for Gender and Sexuality Law in New York.

Tuesday, February 28, 2017
Transnational Collaborations in Feminist and AntiColonial Human Rights Advocacy
12:10 – 1:10 pm
Jerome Greene Hall – Room 102B

The international human rights system emerged to address fundamental questions of peoples lives and the corresponding obligations of states, and as such, has always been a site of contention. When activists bring their struggles to those transnational and dynamic sites of human rights discourse and decision-making, they seize the opportunity to reshape its boundaries and its protections. Yet, to do so, they must navigate and resist deeply rooted gendered colonial structures and imperialist power relations that continue to define our international institutions.

Yifat Susskind is the Executive Director of MADRE, an international women’s human rights organization. MADRE partners with grassroots women’s groups worldwide who confront war and disaster to meet urgent needs and to create lasting change, including through international human rights advocacy.

Come join her for a presentation and discussion on how MADRE traces US policies generating crisis for women and families worldwide, the strategies she and MADRE partners use to resist those impacts, and methodologies to avoid reproducing neocolonial relationships in transnational feminist partnerships and human rights advocacy.

This event is free and open to the public. A non-pizza lunch will be provided. If you require any disability accommodations to attend or participate in this program, please let us know.

This event is co-sponsored by Empowering Women of Color, the Center for Gender and Sexuality Law, and the Columbia Law School Human Rights Institute.

New York: Book Launch: How to Kill a City by Peter Moskowitz

March 07, 2017 at Book Culture on Columbus in New York.

tracking.php?code=SutPVeV8TisOje3gyRNUhI

My book, How to Kill a City: Gentrification, Inequality, and the Fight for the Neighborhood, is coming out March 7. Please join me and the good folks at Book Culture for a launch event. I’ll be there to talk a bit about gentrification, and about how the current political landscape connects to housing issues and taking control of our cities.

More details here: http://www.bookculture.com/event/columbus-launchpetermoskowitzs-how-kill-city

More about How to Kill a City:

In cities all across the country, neighborhoods are changing so quickly that nearly everyone is at risk of getting priced out. The term gentrification has become a buzzword, but we’ve failed to realize that it means more than the arrival of trendy shops, much-maligned hipsters, and expensive lattes. The very future of American cities as vibrant, equitable spaces hangs in the balance.

In How to Kill a City, Peter Moskowitz takes readers from the kitchen tables of hurting families who can no longer afford their homes to the corporate boardrooms and political backrooms where destructive housing policies are devised. Along the way, Moskowitz uncovers the massive, systemic forces behind gentrification in New Orleans, Detroit, San Francisco, and New York.

Moskowitz…pulls no punches in his depiction of gentrification…He paints a vivid and grim picture of the future of American cities.” -Kirkus Reviews

“Using four dramatically different American cities, Moskowitz makes a compelling and important case that gentrification is a ‘knowable and replicable act’ that, left unchecked, can destroy what we love about cities in the seductive name of progress.” —Art Agnos, former mayor of San Francisco
