About Zion80
“A truly soulful experience” – New York Times

Zion80 explores Jewish music – from Carlebach to Zorn and everything in between – through the lens of the Afrobeat funk master Fela Anikulapo Kuti. Led by Jon Madof (Rashanim, Matisyahu), the 13-piece band arranges Jewish melodies using the polyrhythmic intensity of Afrobeat, blended with the madness of the Downtown scene. Madof’s most ambitious project to date, Zion80 is blazing hot and tight as a drum. Spiritual, grooving and endlessly exciting, this is essential Jewish music for the 21st century.

About Hava Nagila
Hava Nagila (The Movie) is a documentary romp through the history, mystery and meaning of the great Jewish standard. Featuring interviews with Harry Belafonte, Leonard Nimoy, Connie Francis, Glen Campbell, Regina Spektor and more, the film follows the ubiquitous party song on its fascinating journey from the shtetls of Eastern Europe to the kibbutzim of Palestine to the cul-de-sacs of America. High on fun and entertainment, Hava Nagila (The Movie) is also surprisingly profound, tapping into universal themes about the importance of joy, the power of music and the resilient spirit of a people.

Bronx: SummerStage Kids: Ebony Hillbillies

August 06, 2015 at Van Cortlandt Park in Bronx.

This is a FREE, non-ticketed event.

The Ebony Hillbillies

Whether they’re playing for thousands of people at Carnegie Hall or a handful of curious passersby on the subway platform at Grand Central Station, The Ebony Hillbillies bring history alive with the still vibrant sound of Americana. As one of the last black string bands in the U.S. – and the only one currently based in NYC – the Hillbillies keep an important legacy alive with a rootsy, homegrown style that many forget was a key element in the genesis of all the music we cherish as uniquely American – jazz, blues, bluegrass, rockabilly, rock and roll and country. Bringing a fresh urgency to the genre for a 21st century world in need of some deep musical education, the ensemble led by Henrique Prince (fiddle, vocals) and Norris Bennett (banjo, mountain dulcimer, guitar, vocals) and featuring Gloria Thomas Gassaway on vocals and bones, William “Salty Bill” Salter on acoustic bass with A.R. or Newman Taylor Baker on washboard and percussion, creates an untamed and joyful vibe that echoes across the generations and transcends all racial and cultural boundaries.

The performance will take place at Sachkerah Woods Playground; Jerome Ave. & Gun Hill Rd.

Bronx: History Doesn’t Have to Repeat Itself

July 15, 2015 at Bronx Academy of Arts and Dance in Bronx.

DIRTY LOOKS: ON LOCATION presents

History Doesn’t Have to Repeat Itself
Stéphane Gérard
Wednesday, July 15 | 7:30PM
video, 84min., 2014

Bronx Academy of Arts and Dance | 2474 Westchester Ave
Followed by a Q&A with the filmmaker

What does history sound like? look like? feel like? The genre of the educational documentary is queered in Stéphane Gérard’s History Doesn’t Have to Repeat Itself in which Sylvia Rivera’s battle cry in the Stonewall era is used to crack open what we think we know about how we got to this moment of queerness and assimilationist politics, making space for new agendas to emerge. Between 2012 and 2013, filmmaker Stéphane Gérard recorded conversations with prominent queer New York artists and public figures: Perry Brass (Gay Liberation Front), Deborah Edel (Lesbian Herstory Archives), Cara Page, Chelsea Johnson Long and Elliot Fukui (Audre Lorde Project), Arthur Aviles and Charles Rice-Gonzalex (Bronx Academy of Arts and Dance [BAAD!]), Camilo Godoy, Megan Mulholland, Michael Tikili and Reginald Brown (Queerocracy), Sarah Schulman and Jim Hubbard (MIX NYC). The film’s remix of oral history, archival footage, and manipulated video finds generations of activists hugging, marching, looking beautiful, pontificating and working / twerking for a better tomorrow.

The Bronx Academy of Arts and Dance and home of the Arthur Aviles Typical Theatre and The Bronx Dance Coalition is a New York City cultural backbone, described in the New York Times as a place where tenacious art “sprouts like grass through concrete in the Bronx.”
