Bronx: Los Van Van

August 08, 2015 at Lehman Center for the Performing Arts in Bronx.

Shortly after the band’s formation, Los Van Van became Cuba’s favorite dance band and came to be known for their sophisticated, often satirical lyrics chronicling the realities of Cuban life, electric instrumentation and multi-layered percussion. In addition to the traditional Cuban charanga band lineup of violins and flutes, Los Van Van also featured multiple trombones and vocalists that, along with Changuito’s virtuosity on drums and timbales, really set them apart. Starting with the song “Pero a Mi Manera“ (1972) which introduced harmonies and arranging concepts new to Latin music, Formell and Pedroso wrote dance hit after hit, many of which have become standards of Cuban music. With the support of the Cuban government, the band toured tirelessly and recorded throughout the ’80s and ’90s. And if the genius of Songo wasn’t enough, they also developed the complex rhythmic style that became known as Timba that was adapted by other bands in the ‘90s. Los Van Van soon became one of the best-known Cuban groups in the world, maintaining a loyal fan base throughout Latin America, Europe and Japan propelled by hits like: “La Sandunguera,” “Anda, Ven y Muévete,” “Te Traigo” and “Yuya Martinez.”

Bronx: Undesign the Redline Interactive Closing Reception and Workshop

July 17, 2015 at Old Bronx Courthouse in Bronx.

Redlining and related policies from the New Deal and Postwar Eras still impact our world and our work in more ways than we imagine. In fact, at the root of many issues like housing, education and policing we find the the long reach of Jim Crow structural racism.

Join Designing the We for a new conversation on how Undesigning the Redline and contextualizing the work we do in the Bronx, New York City, and beyond opens alternative models, collaborations, and processes where another reality is possible. Check out the interactive exhibit and participate in new conversations, both one-on-one and in small groups.

From Gregory Jost:
Come celebrate the completion of nearly 16 years at UNHP and wish me well on what’s next! Instead of buying me a beer at a bar, we will have a keg of a local delicious brew, some decent wine, and some light snacks at this event. I’ll have a jar for donations to cover the costs!

Bronx: NYRR Youth Running Series at Fred Lebow Cross Country

November 15, 2015 at The Bronx in Bronx.

In 1970, Fred Lebow, then the president of NYRR, co-founded the New York City Marathon and became its race director. He had a 22-year span as president. He ran the 1992 New York City Marathon with nine-time New York City Marathon champion Grete Waltz while he was in remission from brain cancer. Although Lebow died in 1994 at age 62, we honor his legacy today with the NYRR Youth Running Series at the Fred Lebow Cross Country race. Perfect for 7- to 18-year-olds, these races are for kids of all fitness levels.
These races are timed and scored, and every child will receive a souvenir T-shirt at bib pickup on race day.

Bronx: The Annual People’s Poetry In The Park / Bomba Fest & BBQ w/ Friends & Family

September 05, 2015 at Orchard Beach in Bronx.

Hola, mi gente!

It’s that time again! Every year around this time I put together a picnic for our friends and family and just like last year, we have LIVE ENTERTAINMENT. If you were one of the OVER 100 people that attended last year’s picnic, then you KNOW it’s an event you shouldn’t miss. OFF THE HOOK!

For those of you who are not familiar with this event, please allow me to explain. During the summer many of us gather for different events, may it be poetry, party cruises, concerts, birthday parties, etc. Unfortunately for some, many of these events take place at clubs or lounges.

I’ve come to understand there are many people who miss out on these gatherings for the following reasons: Employment, Under 21, Unable to find a babysitter, and for many of us, our financial situation isn’t so great.

My main objective: I always do this picnic on the last Saturday before classes officially resume as an End of Summer Break gathering. I do it this way to provide a neutral ground for EVERYONE to attend and enjoy. This is an awesome icebreaker as well. There is no need to “dress to impress”, no pressure of “one on one’ meetings, but most importantly, it’s a FAMILY event. No one needs to be left behind.

This is an awesome way to meet the people you’ve established relationships with over time over the line but have never had the chance to meet. This is also a great way of meeting new people and creating new relationships.

It’s always wonderful to share laughs, stories and great food, play games, dance, and create new stories for new memories. However, you still miss out on some of these awesome events and that’s why I thought to do it different this year.

I’ve reached out to some of my wonderful people and they’ve agreed to contribute to this picnic and turn it into an extraordinary event.

******* LOCATION *******

In the grass area right alongside the parking lot, near the ball courts. There’s NO WAY you’ll miss us. If you’ve attended before, know that it’s in the same spot. I’ll post a picture of the area soon.

Public Transportation:
Take 6 train to Pelham Bay Park then transfer to the BX-12 Orchard Beach

In the Bronx, Take Bruckner Expressway (I-95N) To
Orchard Beach/City Island Exit 8B.
